The Emergent Theatre Laboratory (ETL) was established by Brooke McArthur and Jordan McArthur as a means to acknowledge and recognise the emergent nature of performance practice. One of the objectives of ETL is to unfold the rehearsal process, enabling audiences to see works in progress and the dynamic ways in which performances evolve over time. The second interest of ETL is to stage emergent performances – that is, performances which change over time with the addition of new ensemble members, different directions, or feedback from the community. The first privilege of ETL is the celebration of the experimental and uncertain nature of performance.
