Modern Art Workshop Series

Our art and design workshop series, led by artist, curator, and lecturer Yulia Belan, introduces you to histories and theories of modern art, and some of the techniques and tools used to make modern art. In each workshop, you’ll create your own artwork, putting into practice what you’ve learned.

Colour: The Main Instrument in the Art of Fauvists and German Expressionists

In this workshop, students are introduced to different theories of colour in art, with an emphasis on early twentieth century art movements.

Concepts of Cubism and Futurism

This workshop introduces students to the significance of space and movement. Focusing on avant-garde practices of the early twentieth century, such as Cubism and Futurism, students explore the importance of line, shape, depth and alternative forms of representation.

The Concept of Abstract Art

In this workshop, we expand upon ideas introduced in previous workshops (colour, line, shape, space, movement) to explore how abstractionists attempted to reveal principles of the universe that are hidden in the outward appearance of life.

Game and Creativity: Dadaism and Surrealism Concepts

Focusing on the art of Dadaism and Surrealism, this workshop explores how these artists used playfulness and creativity to stage interventions in everyday life.

Beyond the Canvas Limits: Vladimir Tatlin, Kurt Schwitters, Design

In the final workshop of the series, we examine the creation of artwork that extends beyond the canvas. Following Kurt Schwitters, we explore the possibilities of refuse and recycling in making collages.

Important Information

Our new modern art workshops introduce students to the art theory through practical explorations of colour, shape, form, and representation.


Yulia Belan was awarded a Masters of Arts (Hons) from the Moscow State Academic Art Institute in 2008. She has worked as a curator at the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, and has lectured at the International Design School. Her interests visual arts, design, theatre, cinema, and dance.


The cost of the workshop is $40.00 per/workshop or $190.00 for all five sessions. We recommend coming along to all the workshops to get the most out of the experience, but it’s up to you!

The cost of the workshop covers course materials as well as art supplies for students to create their own artwork.
